Call for Artwork: 2026 Talbot Avenue Bridge Lantern Walk

Seeking: Colorful posters by Rosemary Hills and Woodlin ES school students and Lyttonsville, North Woodside, and Rosemary Hills families and neighbors for display along the 2026 Talbot Avenue Bridge Lantern Walk route and inside the community reception at Rosemary Hills ES All-Purpose Room that will immediately follow. Posters should fit the themes related to this year’s Lantern Walk. See below for more information. Deadline for submissions: November 8, 2026

Submission Guidelines

Artwork should related to one or more of the following themes:

  • Shining/Spreading Light in Our Community: During the lantern walk, community members carry lanterns that light our way through the darkness. Community members also shine their “light” in many other ways that improve our community and help make it a welcoming and inclusive place to live.
  • Unity & Building Bridges to Community: The historic Talbot Avenue Bridge (1918-2019) connected the Black community of Lyttonsville (Linden) to downtown Silver Spring during a time of racial segregation. The new Talbot Avenue Bridge (2024-) now connects neighbors on either side of the bridge — recent and longtime, young and old, of many colors, cultures, religions and countries of origin.
  • 70th Anniversary of Rosemary Hills ES, the first racially integrated (from the start) MCPS school. And last year was the 70th anniversary of Woodlin opening its doors to Black students. Today, both schools have diverse student bodies that mirror the larger community of modern-day Silver Spring.

Before working on their entries, young artists are encouraged to learn more about the history of the Talbot Avenue Bridge and the history of desegregation of Montgomery County schools, particularly as it pertains to their school, to inspire their artwork.

Dimensions & Medium: Artwork should be done on poster board or thick paper between the sizes of 18″x24″ and  22” x 28″ and may be of any artistic style or medium (paint, crayon, marker, colored pencil, collage etc), with waterproof options preferred.

Write on back of artwork: First or Full Name (as would like to be credited), School and Grade (as applicable), Contact Information (school teacher or family). This information may also be written on a separate piece of paper that is attached to the artwork. Optional: short artist statement about the artwork and what it depicts

Drop Off Location: 2002 Hanover St (front porch)

Deadline: Sunday, November 8, 2026
